If you have arrived at this page via my personal web
page Person Centred
Counselling then
You will kow my reasons for involvement with Trans Prisoners was
brought about mainly because of my own experience as a prisoner in the
UK prison system as a teenager in the 80's. This organisation is not in
existance as an apology for crimes committed by Trans people or as a
campaign group to achieve extra privaleges for prisoners who identify
as Trans. Traps is solely aimed at helping Trans Prisoners
cope with circumstances which are difficult to deal with at the best of
times in the outside world but are magnified significantly by being
incarcerated . We also hope to provide some
contact with the wider Trans community for these prisoners by
encouraging members of our community to write to them and break down
the barriers of isolation that is often felt Despite what the
popular tabloids print, Prison is not a happy place for anyone, it is
the place where outcasts are forced to live, imagine what it must be
like to be an outcast among the outcasts? That is why we are here, this
is not a popular cause, there are no votes in it for politicians and
it's all to easy to forget Trans Prisoners who are living sometimes a
life of daily humiliation and fear. As Alex Whinnom of
Press For
Change wrote
'It is appalling being in prison and ten times worse if you are Trans,
these people need all the support they can
get' |

Traps is an organisation offering support and advice
in a purely non judgemental way to all persons who identify as being
Transgendered and find themselves in prison for whatever reason.

Sample of standard introduction letter sent to Trans
Prisoners
28-Sep-0? Dear ? I am writing to you
as your name has been passed to me by ( Who ever) I would like to offer
you support and contact with the Trans community. If you are interested
in this then please reply to this letter.
My name is Tiff McIntyre I am a
male to female TS and founder of the Traps support group, which is
aimed at providing Trans prisoners with friendship and a source of
practical help at a time when they are at their most
vulnerable. I am an ex prisoner myself and
I understand the frustrations and difficulties experienced by trans
people while in custody. Of course I cannot offer solutions to many of
the problems you may be facing but I can identify with the situation
and hopefully at least offer some comfort.
Please excuse the formality of
this communication, as it's a standard letter sent initially to all
Trans prisoners whose names are passed to me. If you would like to
correspond with me on a more informal personal level then I will be
happy to hear from you. If on the other hand you do not wish any
further contact with me then please ignore this letter and I apologise
for the intrusion.
Yours
Sincerely
. |

Comment 02/10/2001 As far as the prison health
service is concerned, there is a commitment to provide equivalent care
to prisoners as that provided to other members of the population. I
would therefore expect, and insist, that my (prisoner) patients would
have exactly the same care from the NHS while they are resident in
Norwich prison (for example). Dr Stewart

From SPR (Stop Prison
Rape) As a gay male, I feel this to be an important topic,
as a great majority of gay/transgendered folk who enter the correction
system experience this type of assault. It is an atrocious abuse of
human rights and destructive to the human spirit. Just because an
individual is behind the bars of a prison does not mean that
"No" is no longer an individual's choice within a system that
encourages reformation.
